Advent 2014

The liturgical season of Advent, my favorite season of the Church year, begins today.  Here are a few resources to help you enter into the season of waiting and prepare to celebrate the birth of Christ.:

Watch for the Light is a thoughtfully selected anthology of readings from distinguished spiritual authors on themes suitable for Advent.

Fr. Richard Rohr's Preparing for Christmas: Daily Meditations for Advent is an extraordinarily rich, unique book for the Advent season.  I recommend it.  Fr. Richard says "Advent is a time to focus our expectations and anticipation on the adult Christ, the Cosmic Christ, who challenges us to empty ourselves, to lose ourselves, to surrender."  See Fr. Richard speaking on the cosmic Christ below.

Subscribe to Fr. Richard's daily meditations by e-mail, wihch will nourish you during Advent.

Begin the new liturgical year with Prayers for the Domestic Church: A Handbook for Worship in the Home, a classic book by Fr. Edward Hays.  It contains simple but beautiful prayers and home rituals for the seasons and feasts of the Church year and the special occasions in the life of each family and person.

If you give gifts to celebrate the holiday, please see my page "Alternative Gifts."  Your purchase will support religious communities in their witness of prayer and service to the poor.
